Endoscopic Ultrasonography (EUS) is a procedure done under anaesthetic in which a special endoscope (thin, flexible tube) with a built-in miniature ultrasound probe on the end is inserted through the mouth into the oesophagus, stomach or duodenum.
Endoscopic Ultrasonography (EUS)
The presence of the ultrasound probe allows the specialist to examine the deeper layers of the walls and surrounding structures including the pancreas, bile duct and gallbladder. It is used to evaluate known abnormalities which have been detected by a prior endoscopy, or were seen on an imaging test such as a CT scan. Biopsies are able to be taken using a very fine needle through the endoscope.
