A balloon enteroscopy is a procedure done under anaesthetic which allows the gastroenterologist to assess and treat your small intestine.
Balloon Enteroscopy
A thin, flexible tube called an enteroscope is inserted via the mouth (antegrade enteroscopy) or anus (retrograde enteroscopy) all the way into the small bowel.
It is able to reach much further than a standard gastroscopy or colonoscopy due to the addition of a balloon attached to the end of the scope. The procedure allows the specialist to perform a detailed examination of your small intestine, perform biopsies and treat bleeding or other pathology.
An antegrade balloon enteroscopy will require fasting beforehand, similar to a gastroscopy. A retrograde enteroscopy will require fasting as well as bowel preparation to clear out the colon, similar to a colonoscopy.
