Poornima Varma graduated from Monash University with Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in 2009 and completed her physician training through the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Launceston General Hospital and Monash Medical Centre in Melbourne and was awarded her fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) in 2016.

Whilst working as an accredited gastroenterologist, she has completed two years of advanced fellowship in Interventional Endoscopy at Monash Health and is also Conjoint Committee accredited in Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) and Capsule Endoscopy. She has also undertaken further training at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney to upskill in Single and Double Balloon-Assisted Enteroscopy and liver transplant ERCP.
Poornima regularly attends courses, conferences and endoscopy workshops to remained skilled and up-to-date with the advancements in her field. Her clinical interests include pancreato-biliary and hepato-biliary disease, gastrointestinal malignancy and general gastroenterology. Specialised skills include performing diagnostic and therapeutic Gastroscopy and Colonoscopy, large and complex polypectomies, ERCP (and Spyglass cholangioscopy), EUS, Enteral Stenting, Capsule Endoscopy, Balloon Enteroscopy and Barrett’s EMR/Ablation.
Poornima works at Austin Health and has private admitting rights to Cabrini Hospital in Malvern.
